The Youth Advisory Board’s (YAB’s) are groups of young people ages 13-24 who focus on issues that young people feel strongly about in their local area.

They do this by consulting with other young people to identify which issues they feel strongly about and commission various organisations/business to help tackle these issues.

20Twenty run two Youth Advisory Boards, these are The Fenland YAB and The East Cambs YAB.

They work closely together and have three main areas focus, these are:

  • Wellbeing
  • Community
  • Democracy

Here’s what we’ve been up to recently:

Get to know more about what we’ve been doing in Fenland & East Cambridgeshire involving wellbeing, community and democracy.

This is also a new area of focus for the YAB’s. This was initiated by a YAB member who is very passionate about politics. The first activity the YAB ran around democracy was a Question Time Styled event held at Cromwell Community College in November. The event involved politicians from the region including Dr Nick Johnson and Lucy Frazer. This was an opportunity for young people to put forward questions to politicians and hear what they had to say about various matters such as transport. The next step for the YAB’s around Democracy is to do some research around getting a young person involved in Youth Parliament for Fenland and East Cambs.

The YAB’s have been working with the Young Peoples Counselling Service (YPCS) to develop a Wellbeing Wallet. This Wallet includes a Wellbeing Journal, Wellbeing Playing Cards and a fidget with some of the journals too.

Alongside these resources will be a Wellbeing Mentor Programme. This involves each form will have a wellbeing mentor. This mentor will receive training to deliver 11 wellbeing sessions to their form throughout the year. The YAB also paid for two schools in Fenland to have a piece of software installed called Tootoot. Tootoot allows students to report issues in school anonymously. This software has been really well received and helped students to talk about issues they may be facing, which they may not have spoke about if it was not for Tootoot.

This year the YAB also have a focus on Community. They have been looking into various factors of the community such as: transport, activities for young people, detached and outreach youth work.
