LEGO League

FIRST LEGO League is an international educational program. It was initiated in 1998 by the American foundation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO company.

20Twenty Productions is launching the first ever league in Fenland, enabling schools to participate in an exciting and hugely beneficial research and robotics tournament. Teams (containing pupils from years 5 and a supervising teacher) plan, construct and program an autonomous robot, conduct research on the topic (see video below) and prepare a presentation of their findings. The educational program focuses on the core values of respectful interaction, shared experience and critical thinking.

After several weeks of preparation, teams participate in a Battle Event and present their findings in the categories of Research, Robot Game, Robot Design, and Core Values.

How does it begin?

Your school will:

  • Receive all necessary equipment
  • Receive teacher training
  • Create your team or teams (max 10 pupils)
  • Receive kick-starter training for participating pupils
  • Design a team logo and pick a team colour
  • Receive team t-shirts based on the chosen logo and colour

A team consists of two to ten pupils from year 5 and at least one adult coach, most likely a teacher. The team meets regularly up until the Battle Event, working during or outside of curriculum time to research, report, build and program.

A detailed coach’s guide will be given to the supervising teacher at the start of the tournament. Our team will be on hand during work hours to support the teacher through the process.

What happens next?

Your team will:

  • Meet, ideally at least weekly, to tackle the many challenges
  • Construct robots to solve problems
  • Create digital illustrations and animations
  • Discuss how small changes to behaviour can have a positive impact
  • Receive ongoing technical support (but not solution assistance)

Members of our STEM team may arrange to observe a team session to answer any technical questions and to review progress. Our team will not provide any assistance with any of the individual challenges on the board.

Tournament schedule

  • Equipment handover and teacher training completed by 31st October 2024
  • Kick-starter training for pupils completed by 30th November 2024
  • Battle Event date to be confirmed, but expected during May 2025

Further details will be provided about the Battle Event as soon as all teams have confirmed participation. The event will be at Burrowmoor School.

Equipment management

  • Schools will be responsible for the care and safety of all equipment provided
  • Schools can keep all LEGO equipment received if participating in 25/26
  • All participating schools that do not have an iPad will receive an iPad for this project
  • The iPad must be returned at the end of the Battle Event to 20Twenty Productions staff
